The Mountain Range of Therapy

When I think about therapy, I picture a mountain range.

Each client who comes to work with me brings their own path, pace, and unique terrain. No two mountains are the same. Some paths are steep and rocky; others wind gently, looping back before moving forward. Sometimes the weather clears, offering a wide view of the horizon; other times, fog descends, and the next step is all we can see.

My role as a men’s psychotherapist in Falmouth Cornwall, and online across the UK, is not to carry you up the mountain or decide your route. Instead, I walk alongside you. Together we pay attention to your experience, the ground beneath your feet, the obstacles in the way, and the stories you tell yourself about whether you can keep going. The walk matters as much as reaching the summit.

The First Summit

In therapy, the first summit might represent insight, healing, or freedom from an old life script. Along the way, you gather tools: self-awareness, emotional regulation, helpful behaviours, and new ways to stay steady when the ground is uneven.

Reaching that summit is not the end. We pause and look back down the path: the moments of calm where there used to be chaos, moments of choice where it felt like there was none, and moments of connection where there used to be isolation. These shifts, big and small, are essential.

The tools and resources you’ve collected, your strengths, coping strategies, and inner supports, are carried forward, ready for the next stage.

The Next Mountain

Beyond the first summit lies another mountain, sometimes taller, sometimes smaller, sometimes shaped entirely differently. Each new challenge requires different tools.

At this stage, we re-contract. We discuss what’s next, what you want to work on, and the support you’ll need. Just as climbers adapt their gear, therapy adapts to meet your current needs. What worked on one mountain might not be what’s needed on the next.

As your companion, my role evolves too. Sometimes you may need a steadying hand; other times, simply a silent presence. Therapy is a living relationship, shaped by what each stage asks of us.

The Range, Not Just the Peak

Seeing therapy as a mountain range reminds us that growth is not linear. It isn’t about one peak experience that “fixes” everything. Instead, it is a series of climbs, each building on the last, moving you closer to a freer, more authentic life.

Each mountain sits within its own climate, shaped not only by your experiences, but also by family, community, culture, and the wider world. Part of our work is noticing how this environment influences your path and patterns.

Most importantly, you are never climbing alone.

If you are considering therapy, it is not about me deciding which mountains you climb. It is about finding the path together, moving at your pace, and noticing every summit, big or small.
