Writing and Training
Writing and Training from a Relational TA Psychotherapist in Falmouth
Why I write
Writing is how I slow down what I notice in the therapy room. A session moves quickly and a great deal is felt without being said. On the page I can test an impression against theory and against my own experience, and find out what I actually think.
I write in plain language on purpose. The men I work with do not need jargon. They need something that sounds like what is happening inside them.
Clinical writing
My writing sits within relational Transactional Analysis. Before I Had a Theory, I Had a Feeling looks at countertransference, formulation and the limits of diagnostic certainty. Holding the Baby, Meeting Yourself is about fatherhood and the hidden child. I have also written a clinical paper, Meeting the Self Through the Child: Fatherhood and the Emergence of the Hidden Child.
The rest of my writing is in the Knowledge Library, including pieces on personality adaptations and on the ethical risks of reducing a person to a type.
Training
I offer training to other practitioners and to organisations, and I am currently developing this part of my work. My particular clinical interests are working with men and personality adaptations, so that is where I can offer the most.
Subjects I can teach include working relationally with men in therapy, why men so often arrive through anger, work or the body rather than through feeling, and how to use personality adaptations as a way of understanding survival without turning them into labels. Training can be shaped around what your group or team actually needs.
I am a member of the UKATA Training and Accreditation Standards Committee.
