When Men Become Fathers: A Guide for Therapists
Some of the men I work with arrive in therapy within months of becoming fathers. Others come for something else entirely, and fatherhood slowly becomes the thing the work turns around. Over time I have come to expect it, and to listen for it.
This short guide is written for therapists who meet men at this point in their lives. It looks at what tends to stir when a baby arrives, why fatherhood can open a door to a part of the self that has stayed hidden for a long time, how to work with that door without forcing it, and where the limits lie, including risk, safeguarding and a man’s right to want help only with coping.
